Send Grafana alerts to a channel

How-toFor adminsReviewed Guides: Grafana and Alertmanager, Workspace settings

Connecting Grafana takes about five minutes. You need a Freesbe admin and someone who can edit contact points and notification policies in Grafana.

  • Make the channel first, such as #app-alerts, and add the people on call. Make it private if alert names or hosts shouldn’t be seen by everyone.
  • Check your alert rules have a severity label (critical, warning, info and so on). Alerts without one post as High. Add a summary annotation too: it’s the card’s title.
  • For the Silence button, you need a Grafana service account token, and Grafana reachable over HTTPS from the internet. Grafana Cloud always is.
  1. Open Workspace settings → Integrations & apps → Integrations → Monitoring and click Connect under Grafana.
  2. Name it (Grafana Cloud), pick the channel, and pick Alerts to post, such as Warning and up.
  3. Optional: fill in Grafana address and API token for Silence for 1 hour. Make the token in Grafana under Administration → Users and access → Service accounts, for an account with the Editor role.
  4. Click Connect Grafana and copy the Freesbe URL. It’s shown once.
  1. Alerting → Contact points → Add contact point. Name it Freesbe, pick Webhook, and paste the URL. Click Test: a sample card shows up in the channel. Save it.
  2. Alerting → Notification policies. Make Freesbe the default contact point, or add a child policy with a label matcher, such as team = storefront, that sends to it.
  3. Leave Disable resolved message off on the contact point, so cards turn green when alerts resolve.

Connect Grafana once per channel, and give each URL to its own contact point. Notification policies decide what goes where, for example team = storefront to #app-alerts and team = data to #data-alerts.

See Grafana and Alertmanager for everything the cards show. If nothing arrives, press Test on the contact point first: if the sample card shows up, check the notification policy sends your alerts to it, and that their severity is at or above Alerts to post.
